Dark Souls is known for being one of the most difficult and challenging games available today. Because of this, there is are a number of people turned off of playing it, casual gamers and gamers who like less of a challenge aren’t playing it. This stired an idea from the games creator Hidetaka Miyazaki, how is pondering making an easy mode for Dark Souls.
Miyazaki states in an interview with Metro:
“I personally want my games to be described as satisfying rather than difficult. As a matter of fact, I am aiming at giving players sense of accomplishment in the use of difficulty. Having said that, however, it is true that Dark Souls is rather difficult and a number of people may hesitate to play. This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about whether I should prepare another difficulty that everyone can complete or carefully send all gamers the messages behind our difficult games.
However, I suppose gamers do not particularly prefer easy games. What they want is interesting and worthwhile games to play, so I think it is natural that hindrance or stress that does not attribute to such interesting and worthwhile elements will be removed in the end. If the number of easy games is increasing nowadays, I guess it is because difficulty is not related to interesting and worthwhile game elements in many games among players.”
An update is to be released for Dark Souls soon, and this update may or may not provide and easy mode for players.
As far as my opinion goes on the matter, I think an easy mode would be a great idea. I myself have been turned away from this game as I have a tendency to avoid stress in video games and I’ve been told this game is truly a stressful challenge of a game. I’ve honestly considered trying it out anyway, but I just know how it will end up: me getting angry, cursing a lot, my blood pressure elevating past normal levels, and eventually me throwing a controller and giving up. I would personally love an easy mode, giving myself and other gamers like more to enjoy the game for the gameplay and story rather than for the challenge we don’t seek. The hardcore players would still have the hard mode while everyone else can have a fun time. I’d say it’s a win win, but I don’t make video games, I just play them.
