Dear Esther Developers Reveal New Game

Thechineseroom, the developers of the game Dear Esther, have revealed a new game that will take place as a “spiritual successor” to Dear Esther. Everybody’s Gone to Rapture is the new game developed by thechineseroom on the Cry-Engine 3, and it looks promising.

Dear Esther proved that people were ready for a new direction in the first-person genre with it’s generally positive reviews and outstanding sales figures for an indie game. Everybody’s Gone to Rapture will be much like it’s predecessor in that it will be purely story driven, but don’t get to thinking it will be exactly like Dear Esther. It’s said to be more about interactions and how they shape the story, and the player will be able to do more than simply walk around.

Creative director Dan Pitchbeck states:

“The concept of it is this almost ’60s-’70s Brit science fiction – this John Wyndham, John Christopher kind of thing – of how the end of the world would be responded to in a rural English location. It’s kind of like that film that was made after the Second World War about what would have happened if the Nazis had invaded – and actually, the film was so controversial because not a lot would actually change for the vast majority of people, or they’d just accept it really, really easily. So we had this idea of going, ‘Actually, if the world ended in a little village in Shropshire, it’d be inconvenient’”

Everybody’s Gone to Rapture is to be an open-world first-person game with an intensely developed story. Pitchbeck states that it’s no small world you will be exploring: “If you wanted to go diagonally from one corner to the other, it’d probably take you around 20 minutes.” Here is the interesting part, each time you play your game time is limited to 60 minutes (one hour) and whatever you can accomplish in that time is what you get – no more. After the 60 minutes you can go back and start a new adventure and look for things you may have missed before. The game is meant to be played way more than just one time, in each playthrough you can expect to accomplish something new and see how your presence affects the world around you. Everybody’s Gone to Rapture is about the presence of your character and your affect on the world around you and the people in it. Each time you play you will get different results based on different things you do, and the outcome of your story has the potential to be very different with every hour.

That’s not all: Everybody’s Gone to Rapture will tell the story of six different characters, unlike Dear Esther. These people will go on with their daily business whether or not you are there, and players can interact and influence them which will result in different outcomes from each interaction and type of interaction. Pitchbeck sheds light on these characters:  “They’re almost kind of memory traces of people that were there, and how we represent them, and whether we do full-on character builds or whether we do something more symbolic, we’re still kind of chewing around with.”

Pitchbeck also states:

“We’re looking at making it much more physially interactive [than Dear Esther], so you can manipulate objects, you can open and close doors, [And] without it being too much like easter egg rewards, the game will reward you for exploring and interacting. So there are places which are not obvious to get to, and you have to do things in order to get to them.”

This game sounds very interesting indeed, and for anyone who enjoyed Dear Esther this is very intriguing and surely a game to look forward to. Everybody’s Gone to Rapture is due out in the summer of 2013 for the PC. Dead Space 3 Confirmed; May Have Co-op

EA has recently confirmed that there will be a Dead Space 3. Yay!

There has also been an anonymously-sourced IGN report that there will be drop-in drop-out co-op in the game, which will be a first for the series.

The IGN article reports:

“The cooperative mode mirrors the single-player campaign, but Isaac’s story changes to accommodate it. At one point in Dead Space 3, Isaac and his counterpart stumble, wounded, bloody, and missing chunks of armor, out of burnt wreckage together. In single-player, the same scene happens without the other character. While Isaac may have a psychological breakdown and experience hallucinations on his own, certain traumatic events don’t occur with someone by his side.”

And,

“Players will also work together (using telekinesis, for instance) to interact with pieces of the environment. In addition, you’ll be able to share ammo with and heal your co-op partner, although there is no revive system — once someone’s down and dead, both players reload the last checkpoint.”

That’s not the only new aspect either, it has been revealed that a snow covered planet will be a part of the setting at one point. So the “white out” rumor is somewhat true. Also, Isaac will be fighting humans this time – as well as  necromorphs. These humans will be heavily armored and will have guns and grenades, and all that fun stuff. Horror is obviously still a theme in the game, it just seems to be done a little differently. Another thing is the size of the enemies. It’s reported that Isaac with face “skyscraper-sized” enemies at points in the game. Wow.

So this is either awesome news or mediocre news, it’s up to you to decided. Hopefully more will be announced at E3 this year.

God of War Ascension Announced For PS3

Amazon.com posted a listing for the newest game in the God of War series and even gave us a teaser trailer, now available in HD on GameTrailers.com:

God of War Ascension Teaser

The narrator says in the teaser: “There was a time before Kratos became the monster known as the Ghost of Sparta, a time when something other than rage consumed him. A time when in spite of the madness that plagued him, Kratos would break his blood oath to an unjust god. A time when he would no longer be bound in blood.”

Judging from that, I believe this game is to be set before the game God of War: Chains of Olympus which was a prequel to the series thus far. The product description for the game on Amazon.com states “Join Kratos as he seeks freedom, redemption, and clarity to avenge his family in the most ambitious God of War adventure in the series so far”.

I think we have a whole lot to be exited for and a whole lot more news to come. I will be updating here on linksaveszelda.com so make sure to check back!

Borderlands 2 May Have 5th Playable Class – The Mechromancer.

I read today that Borderlands 2 may be fitted with a 5th class type to play as called “The Mechromancer”. The Mechromancer is said to be a young girl, who is a cyborg, and can control mechanized units.

According to the developers at PAX East, this is just an idea at this point. So it’s not solid that she will be in the game, but it seems likely. Gearbox Software presidnet Randy Pitchford reportedly showed a picture of a young red-headed girl with pigtails, goggles, and a mechanical arm. She also had a companion with her – the D374-TP aka “Deathtrap”. The Deathtrap is said to look like a cross between a basic Claptap and T-800 Terminator.

Pitchford said the this character will be post-launch DLC that will be scheduled for release approximately 2 months after the game comes out in September. He also stated that we will be getting it for free, as a day one purchase incentive.

I for one am going to be buying this game day one, Borderlands is one of my favorite games and this sequel looks awesome, as expected. I can’t wait until September rolls around for this masterpiece to come out.
