Star Wars: The Old Republic Becomes Free-To-Play This Fall

Bioware has announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic, a science-fiction MMORPG, will have a free-to-play option added to it this fall. The game will also be going on sale for $14.99 (one month subscription included) in August of this year.

If you already have the game and have been paying to play you will receive a sum of “cartel coins” to spend in the game as a thank you for your loyalty to the game. The coins may be bought later on for real-world money. Matthew Bromberg, Bioware Austin general manager, states that the free-to-play availability will allow for the release of more content for the game itself.

He says, about the game:

“Every six weeks or so, we’re going to provide a warzone, a flashpoint, an event, an operation, that sort of thing. The basic idea is that free-to-play players will pay for those content updates with cartel coins. Subscribers will get those updates free as part of their subscription. Our goal was to bring as many players as we can into the core experience to enjoy the game, and then to provide experiences on top of that for people to upgrade to. We’re really excited about putting our best foot forward. We’ve really been looking at this since the first day we launched. It really, for us, became a question of ‘when.’ The market for MMOs is a free-to-play market, and so it’s something we’ve been thinking about for a long time. ”

Certain content in the game will not be available to free-to-play players, so there is incentive to keep your subscription is you already have one. A list of what will be available and what will not for either free accounts or subscriptions has been released. Other than this, nothing else about the game will be changing, other than larger servers and other technical aspects. For more information, check this out.

Some Elder Scrolls Online Details…

While browsing around the internet I’ve come across a few cool videos and articles about what to expect from the upcoming MMO set in the Elder Scrolls universe.

Here is a link to a video about the art of the game. I found this particularly interesting since art in games has always been important to me, as well as many others I’m sure. A game can feel good, play good, have good dialog, and even have a good story – but is the scenery and general look of the game good? If not, it really takes a fall. It’s hard to get into a game if the feeling of the scenery and world surrounding you is not done well, but we can all rest assured that this particular game will not fall short in this category. The Elder Scrolls series has always had beautiful scenery and a general gorgeousness about about them.

Next up – Combat. What is the combat going to be like for the Elder Scrolls Online? We have never experienced an Elder Scrolls MMO, so we know we are in for a bit different kind of gameplay than the usual single player RPG we are used to. In this video and article you will see the team getting everything together for the combat and general playstyle of the game.

A plethora of information can be found here, in the games hub on GameInformer.com

I’ll be updating here with more information as it comes out, so stayed tuned. Don’t forget that E3 is coming up and I plan on making all the information easily available for all of you who, like me, don’t want to spend time sifting through all the info to find what you want. Anyway, game on fellow gamers!

(Debut Teaser!!!)

Yes, you read that right, Bethesda has announced Elder Scrolls Online. It’s in development at ZeniMax Online Studios and will be available for PC and Mac. This MMO will be the first in a series of games allowing players to explore the Elder Scrolls world online with others.

Matt Firor, Game Director of The Elder Scrolls Online stated:

“We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted, It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”

The game will be available in English, German, and French languages upon launch. For more information, pick up a copy of the June issue of Game Informer, as ES: Online will be the cover story. So… can we all jump around around the room shouting for joy now, or what?

Skyrim Gets It’s First Official DLC This Summer

The first DLC for The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim has been announced, and it will be released this summer on the Xbox 360. The DLC is titled “Dawngaurd” and Bethesda is being extremely tight-lipped about details.

Bethesda’s official blog states that more details will be announced at E3 2012. Outside of the above picture that serves as the first artwork for the content, they haven’t had much else to say. We should surely not expect this DLC to be in the same vein as the dreaded horse armor from Skyrim’s predecessor Oblivion. Skyrim’s creative lead Todd Howard has previously stated that we should expect less paid, more full DLC and add-on’s for this title. I think we should gear up for some story content with this DLC, but we will have to wait until E3 to get more details.
