25 Days of Favorites – Day 9

In with all the genre categories is today’s pick, my favorite Third-Person Shooter. It was a relatively simple choice for me since I don’t typically play a whole lot of Third-Person Shooters. Though I typically hate to break First-Person and Third-Person Shooters up since to me a shooter is a shooter, but apparently most people think of them as different genres so I did it anyway. My favorite Third-Person Shooter is of course:

Gears of War 3

Gears of War 3 is the stunning conclusion to the Gears of War series, the series starring Marcus Fenix that is. I adore this series, but when coming up with which game in the series was my favorite, I felt that Gears 3 was the obvious choice. Not only was the campaign compelling and fun, the multiplayer is something I have put over 400 hours into. One of my favorite thing about the Gears games, mainly Gears 3, is the characters. As I stated on day 1, I just love Marcus as a charcter. I also really like the others though, Dom is a great character and so are Cole and Baird. I really thought Anya being on the squad in Gears 3 was super cool, since it’s the first time a girl has been playable in the campaign. There is also Sam, who is cool I guess but Anya is better. Back to the campaign though, this game is non-stop action. I laughed, I cried, and I felt accomplished at the end. Hears 3 is truly a great game in many ways.

I mentioned the mulitplayer since I really like it, it’s one of my favorite things about this game. The customization is subtle and simple, but it doesn’t need to be more. It was weird to have to pay for weapon skins, but oh well. I actually told myself I would never pay for weapon skins because that would be stupid, but two skin packs later my opinion has changed. There is also co-op multiplayer in the campaign and much like yesterday’s pick my boyfriend and I co-oped all three Gears games as well. Again, I love split screen co-op or gameplay in general. It’s such a great addition to any game. Gears 3 also had some cool DLC, like Raam’s Shadow, which allowed for more gameplay but also added some cool things to the multiplayer such as new character skins to choose from.

I still play this now and again, and I constantly crave playing the multiplayer. I’m not even good at it, but it’s fun to play it. I like the excessive gore, to be honest. It’s just fun to blast a grub’s entire body into little chunks with a shotgun or take the head off Marcus with a sniper rifle. Fun stuff. Anyway, all the things listed above and more are the reasons why I picked Gears of War 3 as my favorite Third-Person Shooter.

Honorable Mention:

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

  1. Nice. I’ll go with the Gears Series as well; more specifically, Gears of War 3. It was polished, and was everything we wanted from a true sequel to the first Gears of War. And all of the lovable characters like Cole Train’s charm, and Baird’s smugness, and the bond of Marcus and Dom.
Honorable mention for me would be… I guess Dead Space? I’d say Transformers: FoC, but I only played the demo. *pout face*

    • I was thinking Dead Space as well for runner up, but I feel that while those games are technically third-person shooters they fall more into the horror genre, which I am doing a write up for. So I saved them 😀

  2. Nice! Never got to play it though…was planning on playing it until..THE RROD
My favorite third person shooter has to be GUN, that game was so fun. It was basically a game in the wild west and it had a very interesting story.
    Honorable mention would be…Max Payne.

  3. Gears 3 is my favorite. Gears of War was my first Xbox360 game, also the first game I played when I got my HDTV. I played the campaign several times and spent countless hours in multiplayer. Gears 2 ended up being a little disappointing for me, perhaps because my expectations were so high. Gears 3 felt much more polished. It refined the messy multiplayer of Gears 2 and added more depth at the same time.

Honorable mention goes to Contra Hard Corps. Old school TPS that was a blast to play with friends.
