We’ve made it around the bend and are now rounding up the 25 Days of Favorites. Today’s category is my favorite downloadable game. This means arcade and download only games are in the running. Technically, my choice isn’t download only anymore but it started that way and that’s how most people have played it. This game won many awards at the VGA’s and other gaming award venues recently, and deservingly. My favorite downloadable game is:
The Walking Dead – The Game
I have been following The Walking Dead on AMC since it’s first episode. I rather enjoy the series, to be honest. When this game first came out though, I wasn’t too sure. I don’t know why but I just didn’t have any interest in it. There was a steam sale over the summer, you know that big huge one that everyone (I) spent tons of money on? Well the series season pass (all five episodes) was on sale for $14.99 and I figured I couldn’t pass up the deal and still feel good about my decisions. So I didn’t. I bought the season pass and after the third episode was released I started to stream the episodes. I was quickly sucked into it’s glory, I regard it very highly and while I have yet to write my official review on the game (I know, talk about procrastination) you can be sure it will receive a very high score.
For a download only game, this game really took off as far as acclaim goes. I for one for the story and characters to be ever more enticing as the game went on, making me not want to put the controller down and stop playing. Having to wait for episodes 4 and 5 to come out was hard, I was so sucked into the story that I just had to know what was going to happen next. Much like how I feel with the television show. One of my favorite things about this game is one of the characters; Clementine. She is so adorable and lovable, and she really makes you as a player want to protect and take care of her. You play through the game as Lee, who finds Clem and takes care of her throughout the episodes. The bonding they have and the emotional roller coaster they go through together makes them closer and makes them feel more real to players. It was very well done. Not only is she awesome though, all the characters are great in their own way. Some of them are great because they make you hate them so much, almost with a passion. Others are great because of how much you care for them. It was all very well written, and along with a compelling story they really make the game.
The Walking Dead is a great game, and by far the best downloadable game I have ever played. For being very innovative and combining an action/adventure game with an RPG in a downloadable game, I have to say it’s just the tops. Being able to choose who lives and dies, what actions you and the group will make, who to side with, etc and knowing that all of that will shape your game makes for non-stop/edge of your seat action. There’s never a dull moment in The Walking Dead, and this game showcases that perfectly.
