LSZ’s Game of the Year Awards 2013 – Game of the Year

-Game of the Year-

And the winner is…

The Last of Us

This choice was extremely easy for me to make, which is surprising considering how many fantastic games were released this year. When looking back through the year and remembering games I have played only one stood out to me as a true Game of the Year and that was The Last of Us.

The Last of Us boasts some amazing features. The gameplay was extremely well done and created its own brand of the action adventure/stealth mash-up. The graphics were gorgeous and truly showed the power of the PlayStation 3’s hardware with brilliant clarity and realism. My favorite aspects though were the narrative and character development.

The narrative was nothing short of sheer brilliance. The writers over at Naughty Dog were able to turn a seemingly overdone scenario (post apocalyptic/zombies) into a whole new experience for players. New experiences are hard to come by these days it seems so that alone is incredible. On top of that the game is full of multidimensional characters that develop right before the players eyes in the most realistic of ways. Seeing the characters grow from beginning to end without seeming cheesy or over the top was an amazing thing to behold.

Overall, I found The Last of Us to be the most mind-blowingly awesome game to be released this year. It’s the only game that had me sobbing uncontrollably in the first 15 minutes of gameplay which is notable since it’s truly a marvel for a connection to be made to the characters and story line that quickly, in my opinion. I was on the edge of my seat with excitement and anticipation the entire time I was playing the game and that is why I have chosen The Last of Us as my Game of the Year for 2013.
